An important announcement from Myrrym
« on: May 14, 2011, 02:08:23 PM »
Greetings, GSTers.

Just wanted to give you a quick update on a few things.

First, the good news:

The submissions process is going very well.  Everything submitted prior to May 6th has been reviewed (with a few still being deliberated).  Acceptance and rejection notices for those manuscripts should be hitting people’s inboxes before Memorial Day.  If you plan on submitting something for this reading period, now is a good time to do it.  Remember, you only have two more weeks to send them in!

Now, the bad news:

As of June 1, 2011, I will no longer serve as senior editor of Graveside Tales.

This is not a decision I came to lightly.  As a whole, I enjoy being an editor.  Working with Dale has given me the opportunity to edit for some top-notch writers (all of whom have my thanks for not having me violently murdered after opening their edited manuscripts; really, I appreciate that).  But a couple of things have come up that, I feel, prevent me from giving GST my full attention.

First:  my husband’s new job.  It has been great for us financially, but not so great for us time-wise.  His frequent absences mean I have had to pick up additional responsibilities at home, leaving me with a lot less free time to dedicate to editing.  There are a couple of other things – family and day job issues – that played a part in the decision-making process, but the loss of dedicated editing time was a major factor.

Second:  as most of you are aware, I have lupus.  Usually, it does not cause any problems, but here lately the flare-ups have become more and more frequent, and it is beginning to affect my memory and critical thinking abilities.  There are days when I’m spot-on, and then there are days when find myself going over the manuscript I’m editing multiple times because I keep missing obvious mistakes.  It’s okay to miss something on the first edit.  It is not okay to miss something on the final.

I believe Graveside Tales authors deserve an editor who A) has their wits about them, and B) has the necessary time to dedicate to the job, so I am stepping aside to make room for such a person.  I will complete the edits I am currently working on (August and October releases), finish out this reading period, and send all my notes to the appropriate parties.  My GST e-mail address will be functional through the end of June so I can finish up the edits and send any remaining notices to authors, but after that, it will be deactivated.  Releases scheduled after October 2011 will not be edited by me.  Those manuscripts, along with copies of my notes and any correspondence with the authors, will be sent to Dale to give to my replacement.

Thanks for the good run, guys.  It’s been a pleasure working with each and every one of you.

It's a shame you have to leave the folds of GST, Myrrym, but it's very understandable.

I wish you all the best.

You've been a rock here at GST, Myr, and your editing skills are sure to be missed. I understand you will still be able to write, though, so good luck with future projects. See you around.

Hate to hear it, but we understand. Take care of yourself and your family...and don't forget to write.

Sorry, I am a bit late on this.  I have been super busy with landing a new job, finding an apartment, packing, among other things.

At this very moment I have no idea yet who will replace Myr and she will be greatly missed. We will be definitely looking for a couple editors and a couple of people to help with acquisitions. This will include our upcoming launch of our new digital only line Grave Offerings. If anyone wishes to discuss any of these positions drop me a line.

I'll miss working with you Myrrym. But we won't be strangers. You just make sure you take care of yourself and family. No one understands family and health first like the people who come to GST. Still, I expect that if I ever make it down your way, you'll take some time and show me and the wife the best fishing spots, lol.

Now here's a crazy monkey for you.  :monkeydance
I never fear killing off a character I love. Everyday people watch the ones they love die. It hurts a reader to have a character they have learned to love die right there in their hands and no amount of whiteout will change that. A reality check like that makes all the fiction stuff seem all the more plausible. When I sat with my mother as she died I realized how true these words were. The best thing about fiction is that you can always pick up the book again and read life back into the characters you loved. Unlike life, people in books never truly die forever.

I can say (with experience!) that you're a top notch editor.  The Bleeding Room is going to be a much sleeker book because of the work you put into it.

Thanks for your time and hard work.  All the best!
